“Batten down the hatches” yelled the pirate captain’ “a storm’s a coming”. Thick leather straps secured many of the oak barrels on board that began to strain as the waters adopted a vexed expression. Containers collided and spilt their wares, blending together raisins and dried cherries with cocoa beans and sugared almonds. Jamaican rum and rich sherry tumbled together and mixed with cinnamon, liquorice and sweet tobacco to produce a scent to seduce the toughest of seadogs. After the storm came the calm and time to celebrate with sticky toffee pudding and every pirates’ favourite, rum and raison ice cream.
